In what seems like no time at all the summer of 2019 is well and truly over, with winter on its chilly way. There’s nothing like a change of season to inspire a hot new look, and with VS Sassoon’s celebrity hair stylist, Michael Brown’s help we’ve uncovered the hair colours, cuts and styles that’ll be picking up cool-girl traction this winter. “Winter will follow on from summer’s shaggy, ‘undone’ trends but with a sleek, elevated twist”, reveals Michael. Get winter-ready and try out these chic trends before everyone else!

Trend 1: Comeback of the Blowout

Following trends from this season’s catwalks, winter will see the return of the blowout in all shapes and forms. Whether you opt for a rebellious 1980s edge or a classic lady-like 60’s vibe, you’ll be ahead of the rest.

Michael Advises on How to Get Rosie’s Modern Blow Out:

  1. For a modern blow out, add a touch a volume spray before drying with VS Sassoon’s Digital Sensor Hot Air Styler.
  2. Use the anti-static ceramic rotating brush under your hair section in a horizontal angle to blow dry and pull outwards.
  3. Achieve movement and bounce for the front and sides by using the same brush vertically to create a flick effect to the sides of hair.

Trend 2: Soft Curtain Bangs

This retro-inspired trend is sticking around for another year, but this winter will herald a move towards a softer look. Soft curtain bangs are great style for those with long hair, as it’s a wonderful way to add extra dimension. The long style fringe adds a little extra shape to any hair texture, without too much styling. Wary of trying something new? Consider a few fringe pieces falling around your cheekbones: a good baby step!

“This cut is great for those with a larger forehead or heart shaped face and looks cute with a low pony or top knot”, says Michael. Style your curtain fringe by straightening for a ‘done look’ or curling ‘for a Parisian look’ using the Straight & Curl Brilliance Styler from VS Sassoon’s new Brilliance Collection.

Trend 3: The Dirty Blonde

Following on from the low maintenance trend, going darker at the roots is the perfect farewell to your damaged, sun-bleached hair. However, this is no excuse to skimp out on the hairdresser! This chic style mustn’t look like obvious regrowth, and a good part can help with making the grow out look natural. “Centre parts are BIG this season”, says Michael.  “If you don’t normally part in the centre, use the VS Sassoon 5Q Brilliance High Performance Hairdryer to dry hair in your desired part position. This will pull focus and elevate your look”.

Trend 4: The Blunt Jawline Bob

The bob is set to continue its reign throughout winter following the trend towards embracing natural textures. Ensure the cut falls somewhere between your ears and chin, just in line with your jawline. Here are some of the best blunt bob hairstyles you can try. Tuck behind the ear for an A-line effect or elevate the look completely with some blingy hair accessories.

Michael Advises on How to Style the Blunt Bob:

The beauty of the blunt bob is that it looks so different straight than it does with a wave. Adding a different texture to your bob is like its own accessory!

  1. Start by spraying your roots with dry shampoo as this helps with creating texture.
  2. Use the VS Sassoon Straight & Curl Brilliance Styler to add waves.
  3. Use the heated edges of the straightener and move your wrist in up and down movements and flicks to create bends.
  4. Run your fingers through to create a messier look.
  5. Spray with a flexible hair spray.

Trend 5: Grown-Up Accessories

Hair accessories aren’t just for school girls, and with our wardrobes often consisting of monochrome jackets and jeans, adding a fun hair accessory can take your look up a whole other level. Check out Hailey Bieber, Zoe Foster Blake and Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine for inspiration.

Michael notes, “Old school glamour, such as oversized clips and bows, is really having a moment. Accessories are also a good way to cover up hair mishaps and make a great change from plain old bobby pins!”

Trend 6: The Grown-out Pixie

Unlike the very short pixie style of last year, which featured in the 7 Hottest Summer Hairstyle trends, winter 2019 will see the grown-out pixie come to light. This shaggy pixie cut has a little body due to short sides with choppy layers on top and is super fun. As seen on celebrities such as Emilia Clarke and Jesinta Franklin (pictured), this 90’s hairstyle works for a variety of face shapes due to the many styling options.

Michael Advises on How to Style Jesinta’s Pixie Cut:

“Jesinta Franklin, one of my top clients, has this cut and we create so many different looks”, says Michael. “I use the VS Sassoon Digital Sensor Hot Air Styler for this, adding texture with the 19mm Ceramic Curler”.

Trend 7: The Experimental Top Knot

A trend that is forever being reinvented, this season’s bun comes with a messy twist and is perfectly styled with a high neck sweater. Michael suggests using your hair elastic in more than one part of the pony to create different bends or leaving out the ends for texture.

Trend 8: The Gel/Wet look

This sexy trend is one of the best hairstyles for winter 2019 - especially on a rainy day and it’s an effect that Michael uses a lot on his celebrity clients. There is however a few steps that need to be taken to get it right as the line between cool and drowned out is quite thin!

Michael Advises on How to get the Wet Look:

  1. Get some volume using your VS Sassoon Digital Sensor Hot Air Styler 3D paddle brush.
  2. Then apply a small amount of gel to front, top and sides of hair – this will keep the style looking wet.
  3. I then use my fingers to glide through hair so it’s not knotty.
  4. Finally, I use a wide toothed combed to style the front.

Trend 9: Glossy Tresses

After months of harsh sun and beach waves, super glossy hair will return this winter. Who doesn't love hydrated hair with a light reflective shimmer through it? Perfectly suitable for warm rich chocolate browns or caramel toned blondes!

Michael Advises on How to get Glossy Tresses:

“Use conditioning masks and heat protection to keep hair looking silky smooth,” says Michael. Style using VS Sassoon’s Straight & Curl Brilliance Styler, which adds shine using frizz controlling ions.
