The 7 Hottest Summer Hairstyle Trends We Are Loving

With winter all wrapped up, we’re prepping to ditch the dark hair and trench coats for our trendiest summer hairstyles yet. Whether you’ll opt for a colour, a cut, or prefer to keep it simple with new accessories and styling, this summer is your chance to make a statement. 

We’ve spoken to celebrity hair stylist and beauty guru Michael Brown for an insight into what has been happening in the US, Europe and the catwalk and what we can expect to be flaunting in our own warmer weather. 

Michael who works regularly with Jesinta Campbell and Nikki Phillips told us that this summer we should “expect to see a return to nature with lots of texture, movement and having fun with colour”.

While blondes and coppers are a great add-in to an existing colour, and are classic summer colours, this season hair in all hues of rose are set to take over the darker colours of winter. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Lucy Hale and Katy Perry have already given shades varying from rose gold to pastels a whirl. 

So, whether you’ve been thinking about making the change for years or have recently seen the celebrities opting for pink tones, this is your chance. The look can be as bold or subtle as you like, so go ahead and get colouring!

“I have always been a fan of warmer tones in summer, it can brighten your mood and they’re perfect for typical summery toned outfit choices,” says Michael. 

With freshly dyed hair and extra exposure to the sun and ocean, it’s important to protect your hair.  Use a hair dryer with an EC Digital Motor that reduces drying time and provides better long term hair protection. 

For those not willing to make the change more permanently, Michael suggests trying out a rose gold ‘one day wear’ colour. “Be playful and edgy with all your hair decisions this summer! Keep the icy, blue tone shades for cooler months”.

In the midst of a resurgence of all things 90’s, it should come as no surprise that the choppy and angled 90’s bob is making a comeback. Countless celebrities have jumped on board with the textured, chin-grazing cut, and we are LOVING IT. With Margot Robbie, Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez among the many A-listers reliving the 90’s through the stylish chop, join the cult and say hello to something a little edgier!

Michael Brown suggests following Jesinta Franklin and Cara Delevigne for inspiration for short, platinum blonde styles. For the brunettes, keep an eye on Lara Worthington’s new short brunette toned do. 

In terms of styling shorter do’s, it’s all about texture and waves. Use a ceramic curler to best achieve a wavy style on shorter hair. Michael says before using his ceramic curlers: 

  • Always apply dry shampoo so the hair has better grip. 
  • Adding  some light movement/waves, use some dry wax or texture spray to add texture and definition.

Changing up the barrel size will result in different curl types. Use the 38mm Ceramic Curler for a loose bend, 25mm Ceramic Curler for a wavy style or the 19mm Ceramic Curler for tighter curls.

MICHAEL’S HOT TIP: “If you have followed trends of going shorter with your hair look, when adding in waves and/or movement to your hair, you don’t have to curl the very back of your hair, especially the real bottom layer, as this will shorten your style. It’s nice to still have length at the very back, so just focus on adding movement to the front and sides. Shake out and you are good to go for tousled texture!” 

#3 Try a fresh summer haircut with bangs

Side-swept bangs, also known as a curtain fringe, have been filling our feed throughout the European summer and the look is due to travel here too. Whether you want to create a more interesting look in your medium-length hair or want to combine this look with the 90’s bob for the chicest summer look out there, side-swept bangs will do the work for you. 

Unlike with shorter, more classic fringes, this versatile style means you can still pull it back into a twist, braid or pony to dress it up. This summer is the perfect time to take the plunge and for more inspiration we’ve put together 7 hairstyles with bangs.

The pixie cut is our favourite short hairstyle for women this summer and the girl you need to look to for inspiration is the pixie pro Michelle Williams! 

Whether you go for a shorter, edgier look or a more feminine and wavy style, the power is in your hands to make the pixie cut your own. “Women are becoming more playful with hair, but rather than going girly, they are getting edgier,” says Michael.

Forever a classic, beach waves are back and better than ever. Bringing volume and texture to shorter cuts and fresh life to longer ‘do’s, this summer hairstyle is a universal pleaser for all ages. For those not ready to colour or make a major hair change, this is the summer look for you! 

For this style, Michael Brown recommends the use of ‘dry’ styling products which help create texture and volume and can make using styling tools seem more effortless. His best tips include:

  • Using an automatic curling tool is a must-have to create this summer look. 
  • Finger combs (a wide-toothed comb). They’re a great way to separate waves, as you don’t want your waves to be clumped together or look like you have just styled them. 
  • Always separate and shake out for natural, textured movement.
