Most people will tell you that their hair is best the day after washing it – it takes that long for newly-shampooed hair to settle after all – but the flip side is that you have to make it through the night with your style intact, especially if you’ve got a big event planned!   So in the interest of great hair everyday we’ve put together a short guide on the best hair styles for sleeping in so you can protect your style - and importantly the health of your hair - through the night.

Which Hairstyle is Best for Sleeping?

1. Pick a Braid, any Braid

Braid your hair before going to sleep. This old trick works every time and is one of the best ways to wear your hair when sleeping. It not only protects your hair – stopping it from tangling and breaking – but also gives you gorgeous beachy waves the next day and cuts down on frizz. It’s easy, peasy totally pleasy hair. There are variations on this beachy look depending on which braid you pick and how thick your braid is. Try mixing it up a bit with boxer braids, french braids and more. 2. Bed Bun - Turn Up the Volume

If you have flat hair and want body the next day, a great trick is to brush your hair into a high bun. This look features #7 on our Hair Trends That Transform Your Look blog. You’ll achieve beautiful volume and it’ll protect your hair. Our tip: To avoid any hair kinks, use a Scunci scrunchie to secure your topknot, instead of a tight elastic. Note wearing your hair up is always preferable to wearing it down if you want to protect your hair.

3. The Best Curl Style for Sleeping

The best way to protect your curls while sleeping is to either make sleeping part of the styling process so you might consider old-school curlers for the night – if it worked for nanna ….  just sayin’!

The other option of course is to make sure your hair is prepared properly before you go to sleep – blow dry it carefully and then apply the finishing touches when you wake up. You can either use heated rollers, a curling iron or the VS Sassoon Unbound Cordless Auto Curler, all great tools for creating fabulous curls on prepped hair.

4. The Best Straight or Gently Waved Styles for Sleeping

Again blow dry your hair before sleeping and then cover your hair with a silk scarf while you get your zzzz … yes really! While arguably a passion killer it ‘ll really help to protect your hair beautifully and is a top tip for anyone with long hair. Why? Your hair can easily tangle when you toss and turn at night so brush your hair before bed and wrap it with a silk scarf to prevent new tangles from forming and your style from disappearing. Covering your hair in this way can also help you avoid breakage and prevent split ends as well.

Tip: If you can’t face sleeping in a scarf, either try a silk or satin pillow case - this is one investment that’ll make a huge difference to your hair health. Smooth satin doesn’t catch and pull your hair as much when you toss and turn at night, eliminating bed head.

Some Other Tips to Protect your Style and get Great Hair while Sleeping

5. Never go to Bed Angry or with Wet Hair

We’re often asked when is the best time to wash your hair – in the morning or at night? Our answer is that it doesn’t really matter,  BUT it is important to make sure you don’t go to sleep with wet hair. Sleeping on wet hair increases the risk of kinks and breakage, so take a few extra minutes and blow dry your hair if you wash it at night, before you turn in. If you wash it in the morning, you have the option of air drying it as well. When blow drying your hair make sure you don’t make any of these mistakes so you don’t damage your hair.

6. Get your Beauty Sleep

We’ve all heard the one about sleep being your best bet for looking fabulous the next day, well that includes your hair too! Aim for at least 7 hours a night if you want healthy, shiny hair and don’t forget your disco nap if you have a big partay planned.

7. Overnight Treatment

Use a gentle mist leave-in moisturizer for a quick overnight treatment – it’ll add shine to your hair, especially if your hair is on the dry side. If you have fine oily hair, stop oil build up overnight by using dry shampoo before you turn in – not in the morning. It makes for a far better more natural finish.

So there you have it – all the low down for great hair when you’re on the low down. And who said miracles couldn’t happen over night.
