9 Easy Hairstyles for Short Hair You Can Nail

The average morning for most involves the alarm going off, whereby we inevitably snooze until the last alarm sounds, then desperately scramble to go from bedhead to office chic in 15 mins flat. Wouldn’t this be made so much easier if we had shorter locks? There are so many hairstyles for short hair now that are fun, modern and dare we say it, hot!

Banished are the short bob hairstyles that were once considered mumsy. Short hair is generally considered anything from a pixie cut down to shoulder length hair, and the easiest way to know if it will suit you is to work with your face shape and hair type:

  • If your face is heart shaped or oval, you can sport the shortest styles with ease.
  • If your face is square shaped, try and go for a style with some movement, softness or wave to keep the look feminine, volume at the roots is a bonus too.
  • If your face shape is round, go for choppy layers and keep your hair covering your ears, the key is all about balancing your face. Side swept bangs are another great addition for rounder face shapes.

So what are you waiting for, check out all our 9 easy short hairstyles below:

1. Short Hairstyles for Fine hair

If you have fine hair, the goal is to go for a short style about shoulder length that focuses on adding extra volume. Get your hairdresser to cut in some layers to help create movement, then section your hair and apply mousse. Dry your short hair using the 5Q Brilliance High Performance Dryer and a round brush, going through each section and lifting your hair as you dry. If you find your hair drops out easily, you can add a few rollers in the top section. To add some extra volume you can even try curling your short hair and achieve super cute, tight defined curls on short hair.

2. Short Hairstyles with Wavy Hair

Wavy hair continues to be a super girly look no matter what hair length you have. For shoulder length and above styles, you would style in the same way as for longer hair, except you need a smaller brush and a styler that is not too wide. Section hair, then wrap the hair section around the Elegance Salon Curls conical styler as far up as you want the curls to go. To achieve a loose wave like Natalie Portman, once the hair has cooled, lightly brush and loosen the curls into soft waves.

3. Bob Hairstyles

Sleek bobs are still very much on trend! And they look great when paired with a sharp blazer. Make sure your hair is cut every eight weeks (at a minimum!), as shorter straight styles hide no flaws. Section hair, then use the Straight & Curl Brilliance all over. Once cooled, apply a shine serum for a high shine gloss finish. There are many gorgeous bob hairstyles, choose the one that suits you best.

4. Short Hairstyles for any Age

For a shorter style that works no matter what your age, look to the effortlessly cool Sharon Stone who rocked the red carpet with this style. Her look is achieved by getting choppy layers cut in, then styling it with some volume. Blow dry with mousse and the Digital Sensor Dryer to get a frizz free, moisturised and shiny look. Be mindful that this short hairstyle needs to be maintained every five weeks.

5. Glam Short Hair

If you love old Hollywood glamour, it would be hard to look past this 1920’s inspired style on Carey Mulligan. Ask for a slightly concave bob that grazes your ears, then style with the Digital Sensor Hot Air Styler making sure to tuck your ends under to frame your face. Flapper dress optional.

6. The Pixie Cut

If there was an icon of the short hair movement, then surely all eyes must be on Emma Watson. She has gone from blunt bobs through to the shortest styles with ease. If you’re not sure if you are ready for the pixie cut but want to work up to it, start with a bob and gradually go shorter each time until you feel comfortable. Once you have the pixie cut, all you need is a good hairdryer like the 3Q Digital Motor Dryer and a hair wax to finish. The pixie cut is loved by everyone, with Amelia Clarke’s pixie cut being featured on our favourite celebrity blonde hair looks and tips

7. Shoulder Length Bob AKA the Lob

Our other favourite Emma to sport the short look is Emma Roberts, who has one of the most wearable looks, the slightly tousled, shoulder grazing bob. The bob features #1 in Michael Brown’s 2019 Top 3 Hair Trend Predictions. Part hair down the centre, then add some movement to the ends with the Digital Sensor Straightener. Curve your wrist as you glide the straightener down the mid length to the ends of your hair to achieve the perfect shoulder length bob.

Another way to style a shoulder length bob and adding volume is by using a Rotating Hot Air Styler. Check out this hair tutorial which shows you how to create the look.

8. Afro Short Hairstyles

If you’re lucky enough to have a natural afro then don’t feel the shortest styles aren’t for you. Get your haircut in a choppy style that adds lots of layers and works with your natural curl. Try drying with a diffuser that comes with the Digital Sensor Dryer.

Use the diffuser on the lowest speed and heat settings to enhance your curls, but lessen the frizz.

9. Slick Masculine Short Cuts

If you’re feeling brave and ready to be a head turner, then opt for a style similar to the one Kristin Stewart was seen with at Chanel. It’s a more masculine style, but if you nail it you’ll be fending off compliments left and right. Once you’ve visited your hairdresser, part hair into a deep side, then arm yourself with some slick gel, round brush and dryer like the 5Q Brilliance High Performance Dryer. Tease the underneath layers and backcomb, then smooth over and dry with the coolest setting to finish.
