Don’t wash your hair the day after your appointment

When you get your hair dyed at the salon, your hair cuticle is opened so the dye can penetrate your strands but washing too soon after your appointment can not leave enough time for your hair cuticle to shut and you might end up washing your fresh colour straight down the drain. Everyone is different when it comes to how long it takes your hair cuticle to fully close but waiting 3 days is generally a good rule of thumb when it comes to how soon after your colour appointment to wash your hair. 

Leaving your hair to fully absorb the colour before you wash will mean your colour will stay looking fresh and vibrant for longer! 

Say goodbye to hot showers 

Whilst some people absolutely love a scorching hot shower, your freshly coloured hair really doesn't’! Hot showers can open your hair cuticle which can make your colour fade and rinse out more quickly. 

Try to wash your hair with lukewarm water instead to help preserve your hair colour in between your appointments. 

Dry shampoo is your friend!

When you’re trying to preserve your hair colour you’ll want to avoid overwashing your hair – especially if you’ve got bright red or copper hair! Washing too often can fade your hair dye much faster than if you were washing your hair every other day. 

Between your hair wash days, invest in a good colour-safe dry shampoo that will absorb oil and keep your hair looking freshly washed without having to step foot in the shower! Washing your hair less doesn’t just save your colour from fading, it also saves you time in the morning too. 

Invest in good quality heat protectants

When it comes to preserving your colour you want to make sure that you’re taking the best care of your hair, especially when using hot tools. Make sure to use a quality heat protectant spray before styling to help reduce moisture loss from inside your hair and help to maintain your hair colour! 

Use the right temperature for your hair

If you’re styling with heat on the regular, you’ll know that every hair type requires different styling tools and different heat for optimal styling. If you’re someone that has thick, coarse, frizzy hair you may need to up the temperature for the best results when it comes to styling but if you’re someone with thin or fine hair, try to keep the temperature down on the lowest setting to prevent damage to both your hair and your hair colour. 

Try to avoid chlorine 

If you’ve got coloured hair, you may want to think about staying out of chlorine pools – or at least keeping your hair out of the water! Chlorine can strip colour from your hair, darker shades can become dull and lifeless and any blondes out there have probably experienced the dreaded chlorine green tint that can happen to your hair after a stint in a chlorine pool. 

If you really can’t avoid getting your hair yet in a chlorine pool, consider drenching your hair in conditioner and wearing a swimming cap before you jump on in – might not be the sexiest poolside outfit but your colour will thank you for it, trust us!
