International Fashion Week Hairstyle Trends You Can Actually Do Yourself
International fashion weeks are vital for showcasing the best in fashion, hair and makeup and revealing up and coming trends. New York Fashion Week saw its most diverse season yet in terms of race, size, and age, with Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show featuring lingerie-wearing models of all sizes and races, two of which were pregnant.
Victoria Beckham showed her first collection at London Fashion Week, ten years after the launch of her label which was originally shown in New York.
In Paris, Cardi B made her Paris Fashion Week debut in a show-stopping vintage Michael Costello look.
Following the wrap up of Spring fashion week across the globe some key hair trends have emerged. While they may look incredible, these styles can be easily interpreted and achieved at home. VS Sassoon’s hair expert Michael Brown has some short step by step instructions on how to recreate the four hottest looks, right from the comfort of your own home.
1. Slick Back Hair as seen at Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Victoria Beckham, and Missoni
In Milan and London, the very chic style of slicked-back hair was a hot trend. Designers such as Burberry, Victoria Beckham, and Missoni are LOVING this look, which shows off your facial features and gives an overall edgy vibe. Roberto Cavalli similarly focused on a wet-look elevation of roots with textured lengths.
This modern style is especially useful when fixing a bad hair day and is easily achievable. There are multiple ways to wear the trend - part to one side to add a chic element to your look or slick it back completely as if you’ve just come out of the ocean and worked your hands back over your head.
Hair expert Michael Brown recommends using hair styling tools that have a digital sensor for ultimate hair protection heat and also for the best smooth frizz-free results.
How to get slick back hair with Michael’s tips:
- Use the ceramic brush attachment on the hot air styler to smooth hair and tame frizz. “The styler’s brush head attachment leaves hair silky smooth, so adding product is a breeze,” says Michael.
- For a wet look, once hair is slicked back, it’s as simple as slightly wetting hair, or adding mousse, then applying gel. He adds, “to keep the wet sheen all day, add a top coat of petroleum jelly. This will keep it sleek and shiny all night long”.
- If wearing this look all slicked back, Michael recommends using the Digital Sensor Luxe Airsonic with the styling concentrator attachment to dry hair in the right direction.
2. The Tousled Natural Look as seen at Chanel, Etro, and Coach
Another hot trend seen in September’s international fashion shows was the tousled, natural look. Chanel, Etro, Alberta Ferretti and Coach were among the designers going for movement and natural bend in their model’s hairstyles. This slightly wind-blown style has quickly become a requested go-to for hair stylists, as it gives definition and volume without that overstyled “pageant” hair, that can seem like you’ve been doing your hair for hours.
Michael Brown reveals that these relaxed and textured styles that are on trend are great for when you have bed hair, but for some it takes a bit of effort to make their hair look this effortless.
How to get tousled hair with Michael’s tips:
- For unruly hair, Michael recommends using a hot air styler brush to smooth hair. If hair needs volume, brush from underneath, not just on the top layer.
- To create tousled bends in the hair, use the digital sensor straightener. It’s perfect for creating movement while keeping the temperature safe thanks to the Hair Protect Sensor Mode.
- “Rather than clamping hair and rubbing in one direction from root to end, twist your wrist as you’re moving the straightener down the hair, so that the hair wraps around the curved edges and creates a bend in the hair”, says Michael.
- This technique is different to a wave, it’s only to create a tousled flick, so the more twist in your wrist, as well as moving the straightener from horizontal to vertical in the one movement, the better.
3. Brushed Out Curls as seen at Nicole Miller and J.W. Anderson
Soft, brushed out waves? GREAT. Overly done, un-brushed pageant curls? NOT GREAT. Another catwalk trend that we saw in London, Paris and at Nicole Miller’s amazing New York show was curls but in a textured, ‘cool girl’ look: half brushed out, but still showing tight curls.
DIY Brushed Out Curls at home with Michael’s tips:
- It’s all about the texture products that give hair some body: try using dry shampoo, texturizing powder or sea salt spray.
- Next, wrap hair around a 19mm ceramic curler, creating tight curls. These curls will remain relatively tight, so wrap hair towards the front of your face rather than away from the face (like a typical beach wave).
- Once curled, use fingers rather than a brush to loosen the curls and create a lived-in, edgy effect.
- To finish off the look, spray with dry wax to set. Michael recommends avoiding hairspray, as this will dry out the hair and make curls appear frizzy.
Expert Tip: If you have natural curls, then you can easily enhance them and achieve this look by using the diffuser on your hairdryer.
4. Fashion Top Knot as seen at Fendi and Anna Sui
How to create a chic top knot with Michael’s tips:
- Michael Brown suggests using your Digital Sensor Luxe Airsonic to dry hair in the direction that you will pull your hair up in.
- “I like to leave some little front or side parts of hair out, for a softer look around the hairline,” says Michael.
- To achieve a more interesting bun, twist a pony tight and let it coil around the hair tie, securing with another elastic.
- Using your digital sensor straightener, lightly smooth through front loose sections and twist the wrist to create a bend and flick for a softer look at front of look.
