2019 Spring/Summer saw a return to vintage, with a handful of looks that are a blast from the past but often with a brand-new angle. Updos were few and far between, and had wmore of a focus on cuts and styling tools. Trying to save those $$?? You’re in luck! The 2019 season’s colour trends are super natural, giving you the chance to rock your OG hair colour with pride.

Prada models showed us all how incredibly chic the micro fringe can be, styling the look with beautiful headbands on the catwalk. This rebellious trend is great for those who like the idea of a fringe but want less maintenance, says Michael. “Shorter means slower growth covering brows or eyes, and easy styling”, he says.

For the perfect Summer up-do, blow-dry hair into a low pony or bun, leaving the fringe out. Add a cute headband and voila! “My top tool for this trend would be VS Sassoon’s 5Q Brilliance High Performance Dryer, with its digital motor and anti-frizz technology”, says Michael. “You don’t want the baby bangs to appear fluffy, so using a dryer will give a smoother effect.

Trend 2: 70's Shag

We’re loving the revival of the 70s shag, which has seen celebrities such as Hilary Duff, Hailey Bieber and Sarah Hyland embracing movement and texture, especially toward the ends and in the fringe. This trend works particularly well with shorter hair, notes Michael. Natural movement will be trending this season, as we’re seeing a shift from very ‘done’ curls or waves to a more effortless, undone glamour.

Michael’s tips on how to style your 70’s shag:

  1. To style, use the VS Sassoon Straight & Curl Brilliance to smooth hair.
  2. Then create flat wave bends using the tool horizontally, sliding down sectioned hair (like a crinkle cut chip) in bigger sections.
  3. To create flicks, light ripples and movements, use the tool vertically and flick your wrist when running through the hair.
  4. The entire barrel of the tool heats up, so if loose waves are more your style, wrap hair around the tool to style.
  5. This look is all about that powdery dry shampoo look, so use a spray with matte texture to create definition.

Trend 3: Haute Hair Accessories

“Accessories in general are at an all-time high, so why not accessorise your hair?”, says Michael. Spring/Summer 2019 moved toward fashionable, high-class pieces- expect Alice bands, oversized double bows, statement headscarves, and chic clips and clasps.

“A simple pony tail with a black oversized bow makes a big statement, but when it’s a print or colour, it becomes playful”, he says. This trend is great for those days when one side of your hair just won’t behave! Add in a chic clip, or an embellished clasp, to really elevate your hair style and pull the focus away.

Trend 4: The Wearable Wet Look / Slick Back

This trend was super popular throughout Winter and is here to stay throughout the warmer months. “This is one of my favourite looks, as it works well with all hair lengths and can be sleek either only at the front roots or the entire length of hair (especially for short styles)”, says Michael. “This extremely versatile trend ranges from sexy to chic, playful to polished”.

Michael’s tips on how to achieve the wet look:

  1. For a styled wet look, use the VS Sassoon Digital Sensor Luxe Air Styler with the 3D styling paddle brush to smooth hair.
  2. Apply a hydrating cream (such as Moroccan oil styling cream)
  3. Use the Hot Air Styler to comb through and set the style in place, simultaneously hydrating the hair and giving a sleek, creamy, wet effect that will last.

A comeback to elegance has been seen on runways, with very simple styles getting a facelift with a polished, smooth, healthy shine hair effect. “I love the simplicity”, says Michael. “The radiant shine embodies hair health and quality”.

VS Sassoon’s Digital Sensor range boosts shine and protects hair from heat damage, using correct & adjustable heat temperatures, as well as ceramic plates or barrels. When styling your hair, try the Digital Sensor Luxe Airsonic, which uses a high-tech digital densor that adapts temperature to ensure sustained styling consistency, without excessive heat, for enhanced hair protection. You could also the Digital Sensor Straightener in protect mode to smooth, rather than dry out hair.
