A top knot works even when it’s not (like when it’s a side knot). We asked VS Sassoon stylist Rob Reeves for his advice on how to recreate this go-to celeb look. “This is a great style if you’re hair needs a wash – in fact, dirty hair works for you not against you with this style."
Here's How To Create a Top Knot with 2nd-3rd Day Hair:
- Use dry shampoo to add texture and fullness.
- Start by pulling your hair into a high ponytail (brush for a smooth finish or use fingers for a looser messier finish.
- Then wrap your hair around the base of the ponytail and secure it with a hair tie to create a top knot.
- To create a larger fuller bun style knot either backcomb the pony before pinning or add a hair donut for extra height.

#2 Waves & Volume for Flat Hair

So what if your hair isn’t dirty but in between and in desperate need of a perk up? Well these leading ladies have got it all worked out. Nicole Kidman is famous for her wigs and extensions these days and we’re betting she added a few here to create volume. Nowadays clip on micro extensions are the go. They subtly add length and volume. As long as they’ are made from natural human hair - can be styled in the same way as your own hair.

Rob Advises on How to Get Kirsten's Casual Curl Look:
- Start by spraying your roots with dry shampoo. It will give your hair bounce, as well as adding texture and volume. It will also reduce shine and add a matte finish which is perfect for this look.
- Then take a medium sized curler like the VS Sassoon 25mm Ceramic Curler, starting at eye level, wrap your hair around the barrel mid-length. Curl away from your face leaving the ends straight. No need to use the clamp.
- Spray with a flexible hair spray after the curler has been removed from each section.
- Once cooled, brush through gently and finish either with a light spray of dry shampoo or hairspray for hold and texture.
#3 Use Heated Rollers to Save Time

Those that choose highlights over ombre are definitely more committed to regular visits to the salon, here are some tricks to keep you on point when your roots are showing especially if you have premature greys.
