Liven up your top lip

best moustache styles

The humble moustache has had quite a reputation over the years and is now making a comeback with stylish gents across the globe. Not only a grooming statement, but it is also the ideal choice of lads who don’t aren’t able to grow a full beard.

Though it may seem like a small statement, a little bit of upper lip fuzz has become iconic for some of the biggest stars in history, not just Uncle Garry at the family BBQ.

We have teamed up with Lad’s styling expert Jules Tognini to give some simple, easy to follow tips on how to use VSforMen grooming products to own your moustache!

First grow out your moustache!

Just like all good things, achieving the below looks will require some patience. The most important thing is to let your facial hair grow out evenly so you don’t look like a 12-year-old!

You will wait for your moustache and soul patch to flourish. Moisturising your face will provide a better, healthier environment for faster hair growth. This will also let you trim down to an even, natural looking length when you shape your moustache.

Once you’ve achieved the length you are happy with, the first step is to trim down to a goatee. Then we will show how to trim down to a handlebar, pilot and pencil moustache style.

What are the different types of moustaches?

the goatee

The Goatee

The ’90s is back and the goatee is leading the charge. In a research carried out by VSforMen, 69% of Australians voted the goatee as the grooming trend that they would most like to see make a comeback* (though the humble mullet was an honourable mention).

This included the ladies of Australia, who are keen to see lads mirror the styling of Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt circa 1995 and Kurt Cobain during the never mind Years. It’s such a winner because it can be altered to suit just about any face shape.

To achieve the goatee look, follow these key steps to make the process easy and pain-free:

  1. Make sure that your skin and beard are dry to start off with.
  2. Use the X3 PRO on a 0 setting to remove all hair in the cheeks and underneath the neckline
  3. Work down against the grain to avoid irritation.
  4. You can then trim your soul patch and moustache to your desired length and shape, rocking either a clean cut look or more natural, lived in finish.
  5. Take your trimmer along your top lip to remove excess hair curving over into your mouth.
  6. You can choose a connected moustache and soul patch or a disconnected look (cartoon?).
  7. Apply beard oil and moustache wax to keep your goatee looking sharp

Now, if you feel like you resemble David Brent from the office more than Kurt Cobain and want to get more adventurous, you can lose the soul patch and let your moustache take centre stage with one of these great looks.

Pro Tip: Repeat this process every few days depending on how clean cut you are looking to be.

The Goatee

The Handle Bar

A real statement for the man who takes on the world like Hulk Hogan took on competitors in the wrestling ring, this iconic style is also known as the horseshoe. The classic style requires long, thick coverage, but this has not stopped many a brave man rocking this with far thinner top lip length.

To achieve the handle bar look:

  1. Make sure that your skin and beard or goatee are dry.
  2. Use the X3 PRO on a 0 setting to remove hair on your cheeks, under your neckline and under your bottom lip (your soul patch), leaving the natural arch of your moustache.
  3. Start by working down against the grain to avoid irritation.
  4. Tap the X3 PRO along your top lip to remove excess hair curving over into your mouth.
  5. Apply moustache wax to stay sharp.

Pro Tip: Just like the goatee, repeat this process every few days depending on how clean cut you are looking to be.

The handlebar moustache

The Pilot Moustache

A neater, more mainstream look, Tom Selleck made this famous in his Miami Vice days. The classic style requires a longer, thicker growth, so patience is once again a virtue. However, once the process of growing is done, it’s pretty easy to maintain.

To achieve the pilot moustache look:

  1. Always start with a dry skin and beard.
  2. Use the X3 PRO on a 0 setting to remove hair on your cheeks and any growth under your bottom lip including under your neckline.
  3. Start by working down against the grain to avoid irritation and then take your trimmer along your top lip to remove excess hair curving over into your mouth.

Maintain this look by trimming every few days depending on how short or thick you want it.

Pro tip: Apply some wave to that stache to stay sharp!

The Pencil Moustache

Made famous by the black and white movie stars from the golden years of Hollywood such as Errol Flynn and Clark Gable, this is the perfect look for the cultured gentleman. Requiring less growth than the other looks, this little beauty will require more maintenance to keep it looking dapper.

How to maintain your pencil moustache style:

  1. Make sure that your skin and beard/goatee are dry.
  2. Using your trimmer, set it on 0 and start removing hair on your cheeks, any hair under your bottom lip and anything on your neckline.
  3. Start by working down against the grain to avoid irritation.
  4. Tap the X3 PRO along your top lip to remove excess hair curving over into your mouth.
  5. Decide on the style before shaping (see below). Remember that the fairer the hair, the thicker the style.
  6. Use an edging trimmer on a 0 setting to trim the contours downwards from the nose using its base as a reference point for a straight line.
  7. Use an edging trimmer on a 0 setting in slight increments on each side to avoid taking off too much. Bite on the top lip to tighten the skin.
  8. Use the finishing trimmer to  edge to finish the straight line across the lip
  9. Repeat this process every few days depending on how clean cut you are looking to be. And finally apply some wax to finish it off.
