This defining look made famous by the likes of Jennifer Anniston and Cindy Crawford is classy and classic, and we couldn’t be more excited about its comeback. We’ve seen many trends from the ‘90s blowing up our Instagram feeds, and we’ve been lusting after this voluminous retro style since TikTok showed us how to create a Clueless-worthy ‘do in minutes.

A voluminous blowout is the perfect style to show off your gorgeous locks, and the good news is it’s pretty easy to recreate at home. All you need is a good blow-drying brush and the right styling tool. Stay tuned to find out five striking ways to rock 2021’s most glamorous hair trend.

1. Hot Roller Volume

TikTok has taught us a lot over the past years. From sock curls to bubble braids, we’ve been glued to our screens trying to recreate these viral styles. Now, thanks to the enviable locks of one TikToker, Lilly Van Brooklyn, we’ve dug out the rollers and have been making some hair magic. Follow these easy steps to create gorgeous roller curls in under an hour:

  1. Using VS Sassoon Classic Multi Curls is a great way to add volume and soft curls. To get started, first, preheat your rollers.
  2. Working front to back, take a section of hair the same width as the roller and hold it at the end of the section. Roll towards the head, then clip in place. We recommend using your largest rollers for the ultimate ‘90s blowout look.
  3. Repeat until all your hair is rolled up.
  4. Allow the rollers to cool then remove.
  5. Tease the hair out with your fingers or gently brush to create smooth, subtle waves. You can watch a step-by-step tutorial here

If you don’t have hot rollers, you can watch Lilly’s tutorial to create the same voluminous style with regular rollers. All you need is a large barrel curler such as the 38mm Ceramic Curler

2. Bombshell Blowout

Reminiscent of the hair sported by models Claudia Schiffer and Elle Macpherson back in the day, the ‘90s blowout look is all about salon-worthy shine, bounce and volume. This retro ‘do is super on-trend, and it’s easier to create at home than you might think.

Step 1: Healthy hair

The best way to show off a bombshell blowout is by having healthy hair to begin with. Using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, getting regular trims and treating your hair to a deep conditioning mask once a week is a good start. Before you blowout your hair, ensure it’s clean and apply a heat protectant. You can also add a volumising spray or root-boosting mousse before you begin styling to amplify your bounce.

Step 2: Rough dry

Grab your hairdryer and use it to rough dry your hair. Flip your hair upside down and use a brush to comb it through while drying.

Step 3: Finish drying

Now flip your hair back up and attach the concentrator nozzle. Section your hair and use a round brush to blow-dry the strands away from your face until completely dry, curling the ends under as you go. If you find some of the volume has been knocked out, you can flip your hair over again, concentrating your brush at the roots, or add rollers for an hour or two.

Step 4: Style

Brush your hair, then flip it over and back, teasing the front of your hair to the side. To help keep the volume at the roots, you can apply a small amount of dry shampoo. Finally, spritz with some shine spray.

Top tip: A hot air styler is another great tool for creating a voluminous blowout in minutes.

3. Deep Side Part

A deep side part is one way to take a bouncy blowout to a sexy new level using the classic hair flip technique. This undone vibe was a ‘90s must, and it hasn’t gone out of fashion.

  1. Start with a centre parting first then, take a comb and place the edge at the back of your parting and pull diagonally forward towards the edge of your eyebrow. Separate the hair. It doesn’t matter which side you choose to part, just go with whatever feels comfortable.
  2. Comb the hair to fully part it, shaping and teasing it over to the side. You can tuck it behind your ear or use hairspray to help it hold.
  3. Now add a little volume by spraying some hairspray or dry shampoo under the roots around the crown. Let the hair fall down and dry. If you want even bigger volume, you can use a brush to backcomb the same sections a couple of times underneath each strand, then use a brush or comb to smooth out the top layer.

4. 90s Curls

Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey… they all rocked the most amazing cascading ‘90s curls! Unless you really throw it back and opt for a perm, or you’re naturally blessed with curled tresses, this big curly style can be a little tricky and time consuming to recreate at home, but you can create major volume in minutes by using your hairdryer’s diffuser attachment.

First, start with wet hair and apply a heat protectant before blow-drying with a diffuser. Dry from the bottom, scooping the hair up to the crown and holding for a few seconds. Keep repeating until all the hair is dry. Then, take a 19mm Ceramic Curler and finish the style with a few defined curls around the face and through the hair. Finally, mist with hairspray to help your curls hold. You can watch a step-by-step tutorial here.

5. Voluminous High Pony

The high ponytail was one of the signature looks of the ‘90s. Team voluminous waves with a scrunchie, and you’ve got a cross between Cher from Clueless and Sporty Spice. For the ultimate ‘90s look, blowout your hair (see bombshell blowout above), then brush up into a high ponytail. Tie off with your favourite scrunchie and use your Nourishology 40mm Curler to flick out the ends.
