Vidal Sassoon: The History

Vidal the Stylist

Vidal Sassoon is an iconic figure of British hairdressing. Born in 1928 he rose to prominence in London's ‘swinging 60's'. His famous hairstyles include the Geometric, the Five Point Cut, the Nancy Kwan, the wash-and-wear perm and what he is probably most well known for the Asymetric Bob.

Sassoons hair styles were often short and angular, cut on a horizontal plane like his 1963 Bob Cut. Although they often appeared severe they we all based on organic designs which allowed the hair to fall easily into its cut shape and relyed on the hairs natural shine for their finished effect.

The commercial nature of the Vidal Sassoon hair styles lead to his rise in both business and his influencial status within the hairdressing industry. What Vidal Sassoon saw as his craft quickly turned into a multi-million dollar industry. By the early 1980s, after a move to the US, Sassoon sold his name to the manufacturers of haircare products and the multinational Procter & Gamble.

The hair styles and haircuts of Vidal Sassoon were all designed to be low maintainance and modern and this made his style the commerical force behind the hairstyling revolution that became salon perfect hair at home

Today, the brand Vidal Sassoon is known in electrical hair care appliances as VS Sassoon and the philosophy stands today of salon perfect hair we can all create at home.

"Hair is nature's biggest compliment and the treatment of this compliment is in our hands. As in couture, the cut is the most important element ... haircutting simply means design and this feeling for design must come from within."
