Waved Ponytail

Waved Ponytail created using the Wave MagicBeachy, loose, open waves that you can create with the VS Sassoon Wave Magic are the look of the moment with everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Jennifer Lopez wearing them. Our Creative Team will show you an alternative way to wear waves so that you can take your style from day to evening as red carpet glamour such as Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway recently showed.

"The humble ponytail was anything but humble at New York Fashion Week this year where it was used to  great effect by many of the designers and their hairstylists" said Emiliano Vitale, who used the look himself when he worked on the Nomia show.

How to get this VS style

  1. Prepare your hair for the Waved Ponytail look by shampooing, conditioning and drying it fully.

  2. Separate out the front section of your hair that will form the waved side parting area. To do this, use your hands and fingers to section, this will ensure the section lines are not too neat and retain a more soft, textured feel to the finished look. The section should be about 5cm deep and have a heavier and lighter side falling either side of your parting. Clip out of the way.

  3. Take the remainder of your hair back into a ponytail using a paddle brush. Again you don't have to be super neat for this look. The trick is to get the positioning just right so that the ponytail jumps out and then drops, therefore it should sit between the crown and the top of the neck, giving it a more elegant 'cocktail party' feel. Secure the ponytail with an elastic. To finish it off use a small piece of hair to wrap over the elastic to hide it (secure with a hair pin) and give it that extra finish.

  4. Separate your ponytail into 3 to 5 sections depending on how much hair you have and how much wave you want. The finer the sections, the tighter the wave. The larger the sections, the looser. Take a section and lightly spray with a little hairspray. Before styling, make sure the heat protection glove included with your Wave Magic is is worn on the hand which is wrapping the hair around the barrel. Then use your Wave Magic, wrap the hair around the oval barrel, hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat on all sections.

  5. Returning to the front section of hair that you separated in step 2, use the same method of waving the hair as you did in step 4, dividing the hair as required.

  6. Finally, slightly brush out the wave in both the ponytail and the front section with a paddle brush until the desired, full textured look is achieved.

Additional Tips

We asked Emiliano his key styling tips to achieve this look:

"Make your parting deep and low to be on trend with this, it's also a very flattering look for the side parting for most face shapes. You really do need long hair for this ponytail to gain a high fashion edge for medium to thick hair. If you don't, you can vary the look by pulling the ponytail low to one side more like Natalie Portman's style at the Oscars.  And don't start your waves too close to the scalp, leave about 5cm straight before wrapping the hair around the Wave Magic. The result, a soft floaty raw finish to the waves will make this look feel very fresh and now. To achieve this, brush the waves through slightly to finish and as you do so, lift the hair in the brush and let it fall".
