This VS Style creating volume to the sides and lengths of your hair with a raw, textured finish was created by Emiliano Vitale after working on the various designer shows at the recent New York Fashion Week. He was inspired to create this very wearable 'glunge' look (90's grunge meets todays glamour) by the hair he created for the Odd Molly show.
He explains "this hairstyle has a really lived in look and it's about not being too polished and having a really raw, unfussy, textured finish. Building volume at the sides with the Big Hair Root Boost is key to this shape and making your hair look current and on trend. Celebrities like Lea Michele have worn their versions of the Raw Glam look to walk the red carpet, but the trend to a raw textured finish can be seen on many other celebrities like Scarlett Johannsen, Olivia Munn and Minka Kelly".
Prepare your hair by shampooing and conditioning and apply a little mousse which we recommend as the best styling product to achieve and support this Raw Glam look. Before you begin to style your hair, pre or rough dry hair so that it is about 80% dry. This makes styling quicker and easier. Then separate your hair into 4 rough easy to work with sections and secure with clips.
Divide each section into 2 to 4 further sections depending on how much hair you have. Begin to create volume to the roots of the hair and fullness to the ends by draping the hair over the Big Hair Styler. Hold it in at the roots for a few seconds, press the rotation button (ensure it is rotating away from you) and lift it up and out whilst resisting the rotation, moving it down to the ends. Continue through all sections until all hair is styled.
Once all of the hair has been styled with the Big Hair Styler, separate out a halo section around the curve of the head as shown. This halo is key to supporting the on-trend width you want from this look.
Using the Big Hair Root Boost, micro crimp the root area of the halo section. Spraying each section with a little hairspray just before crimping will give added support.
Turn your head upside down or over to the side then spray a little hairspray into it and break up the micro crimp with your fingers. When you come upright the natural fall of the hair will cover the under layer sections that have been micro crimped.
Finally shake out the hair and shape with your hands as desired.
We asked Emiliano if he had some tips to help to achieving this look on different hair types:
"This is a full, volumous look and can only be improved by the more hair you have, but if your hair is a little finer, a good tip to add even more volume is to use the Big Hair Root Boost on random sections of your hair and not just at the roots and randomly along the hair too. If you then brush the micro crimp effect through, you will hardly notice it but your finer hair will have that extra volume it needs. This look won't work on really fine hair though. Before you use the Big Hair Styler on each section of hair, give the section a light spritz with hairspray and you will get a slightly more textured finish. If you have curlier hair, don't try to over straighten it with this shape. Go for a version of this hair style with a little more wave to it. Having natural curls will make it even more volumous and help support the look and the square shape".
